The CDF dress uniform will be worn when appropriate to formal meetings, special events, or gatherings. It will be purchased and maintained by all uniformed personnel as specified in Section 1501.1 (see section). The dress uniform will always include wearing the jacket, tie, and dress uniform cap. The following items meet the CDF dress uniform standards. The Department may consider and approve equipment uniform garment items submitted by vendors providing garment material and construction meets required specifications and color matches.

The following dress uniform items are currently approved:
Non-Chief Officer (Fire Captain and below):
Semi-Pershing style cap with round top of the style commonly worn by the fire service, equivalent to Midway Cap Co. style #102. Cap cover and framed covering fabric shall be black in color to closely match dress uniform, preferably made of the same fabric as the uniform. The front of the cap shall be of a height sufficient to accommodate a one and one-half inch in diameter badge. The cap visor shall be two inches in length, angled down slightly, made of black patent leather. A nickel-plated expansion cap strap shall e affixed to the cap with silver or nickel finish “Eureka” style buttons. Caps may be of exact size fit or may have adjustable headband features.
A rank insignia cap badge, nickel or silver-plated, one and one-half inch in diameter will be affixed to front of cap. Firefighters will wear the traditional Firefighter rank design, Fire Apparatus Engineers will wear single trumpet design, and Fire Captains will wear double trumpet design. Blackington style #A2327 (FF), #A2912 (FAE), and #A175 (FC).
Chief Officers (Battalion Chief, Assistant Chief, Deputy Chief):
Semi-Pershing style cap with round top of the style commonly worn by the fire service, equivalent to Midway Cap Co. style # 102. The cap cover shall be a white leatherette material. The frame covering shall be black colored, mohair ribbed style fabric band. The front of the cap shall be of a height sufficient to accommodate a one and one-half inch in diameter cap badge. The cap visor shall be two inches in length, angled down slightly, made of black patent leather. A gold finish expansion cap strap shall be affixed to the cap with gold finish “Eureka” style buttons. Caps may be of exact size fit or may have adjustable headband features.
A rank insignia cap badge, gold finish one and one-half inch in diameter will be affixed to the front of cap. Battalion Chief will wear two crossed trumpets, Assistant Chief will wear three crossed trumpets and Deputy Chief will wear four crossed trumpets. Blackington style #2911 (BC), #A2910 (AC), #A1962 (DC).
Unit Chief, Staff Chief and above):
Semi-Pershing style cap with round top of the style commonly worn by the fire service, equivalent to Midway Cap Co. style # 102. The cap cover shall be a white leatherette material. The frame covering shall be black colored, mohair ribbed style fabric band. The front of the cap shall be of a height sufficient to accommodate a one and one-half inch in diameter cap badge. The cap visor shall be two inches in length, angled down slightly, made of black fabric with gold colored embroidered oak leave cluster design (equivalent to Midway Cap Co. visor style #19.) A gold colored lace cap strap (equivalent to Midway Cap Co. #GML #40) shall be affixed to the cap with gold finish “Eureka” style buttons. Caps may be of exact size fit or may have adjustable headband features.
A chief rank insignia (five crossed trumpets) cap badge, gold finish one and one-half inch in diameter will be affixed to the front of cap. Blackington style #A2811.
COAT:
Black color; 100% wool or 55% polyester/45% wool blend; double breasted coat style; six buttons – California “Eureka” style silver or nickel finish metal buttons (gold finish metal buttons for chief officers), male and female sizing, in regular or trim fit.

The CDF uniform patch will be sewn on each sleeve center one inch below shoulder seam.
One silver-colored, one-half inch braid will be sewn on the top side of each sleeve between seams. Bottom of braid will be three inches above the cuff. Chief Officer’s braid will be gold colored. Braid manufacturer – A.H. Rice, Vellum Style 0N3L06-7100 Silver #493, Gold #96
Badge tab on coat is to be affixed in a position above the pocket to allow badge not to be covered by lapel.
BADGE:
The CDF issued badge will be worn over left pocket at badge tab.
COAT NAMEPLATE:
The only nameplate authorized for wear on the dress jacket is as follows: metal, with silver finish, (gold finish for chief officers). Size will be one-half inch by two and three eighths inches. The first initial and last name of the employee will be engraved on the nameplate in black letters. This nameplate will be manufactured within the conservation camp system. The nameplate will be positioned center over the right breast portion of the dress coat, in line with the pocket opening found below the badge area on the left breast portion of the coat.
TROUSERS:
Black color, 100% wool or 55% polyester/45% wool blend: plain front and straight leg style; two side and two rear hip pockets.

BELT:
One and one-half inch wide, black leather, basket-weave design. The buckle will be a plain square-shaped with center bar, with nickel finish (gold finish for chief officers). The belt will be comparable to Chambers Model #6050-01CB.
SHIRT:
White in color, polyester/cotton blend fabric. Long sleeves with CDF uniform patch sewn onto each sleeve centered one-half inch below shoulder seam. The following uniform shirts are approved:
Male: Flying Cross #35W-5400 or Elbeco #877-3
Female: Flying Cross #126R-5400 or Elbeco #801-3
T-SHIRT (WHITE):
Short sleeve, 100 % heavyweight cotton 6.0 ounce or heavier, crewneck, plain with no lettering, markings or designs.
NECKTIE:
The necktie will always be worn with the dress uniform. It will be a Broome 3-inch, style #455. Plain, black in color with Windsor four-in-hand pre-tied or Snap-On, regular or extra length. Fabric to be 75% polyester/25% wool, tropical weave or equivalent to closely match uniform fabric. A plain tie tack or small plain tie clasp is acceptable to keep the tie in place. Finish on tie tack/clasp should be silver (gold for chief officers).
NOTE: For female employees the following optional tie is authorized: Broome Style TV (FG 101) black in color, cross-over tie with button snap and adjustable band.
COLLAR BRASS:
Appropriate rank designation collar brass as specified in Section 1510.1 will be worn on the uniform shirt only. Only Blackington and Company collar brass products are approved.
SHIRT NAMEPLATE:
A standard nameplate without CDF logo will be worn centered over the right shirt pocket flap with lower edge resting on top edge of pocket flap. The employee’s first and last name will be engraved on the plate. The employee’s unit will be engraved below the name. Nameplate size will be seven-eighths inch by three and one-quarter inches or long enough to allow names to be engraved legibly. The nameplate will be plastic, manufactured with in the conservation camp system. Colors for nameplates are as follows: silver background with black lettering, (gold background with black lettering will be worn by chief officers).
SOCKS:
Fine weave material, black in color, plain without pattern or designs, closely matching color of specified tie. Any socks may be worn with boots if socks are not visible.
Female employees may wear natural colored nylons.
FOOTWEAR:
Black leather laced dress oxford or chukka style shoe, or Wellington style dress boots, with one-piece plain toe without design or stitching. All footwear must be maintained with high gloss finish.
Female employees are authorized to wear an optional shoe style as follows: plain black leather with smooth finish, closed heel and toe, with variable heel height of three-fourths inch to two inches.
The items listed below are options that may be worn with dress uniform attire.
SKIRT:
Flying Cross Style
Female – 4800 SK (55% polyester/45% wool) black in color.
Skirt hemmed at mid-knee.
SERVICE STARS:
For every five years of service with CDF, there may be one embroidered, gold in color five-point, three-quarts inch star placed one-half inch above the braid on the left sleeve of the dress uniform jacket. Service stars can also be worn on a long sleeved uniform shirt three-quarters inch above the sleeve/cuff seam on the left sleeve. Placement of stars will confirm as shown (see exhibit).
FLAG PINS:
A small U.S. flag pin not to exceed one-half inch by one-half inch may be worn centered one-inch above the nameplate on the uniform shirt.
SERVICE AWARD PIN:
Any state service award pin not to exceed one-half inch in size may be worn centered one inch above nameplate on the uniform shirt.
EMS PIN:
A small metal emblem pin, no larger than one-inch consistent with expertise and training may be worn centered one-inch above the nameplate on the uniform shirt by CDF employees who have successful completely EMT/First Responder/First Aid Training, and who maintain their proficiency and certification. NOTE: This pin if worn in conjunction with the U.S. flag pin will be worn to the left of the flag equally spaced one-inch apart above the nameplate.
